A yoga retreat is more than just a vacation. It’s an opportunity to reset, reconnect, and dive deeper into your practice. But with so many retreats out there, how do you choose the one that’s truly right for you?
Not all retreats are created equal. I know, I've been on A LOT of retreats over the years! Some focus on deep meditation and silence, while others blend yoga with adventure, community, or self-exploration. Whether you’re looking for a soulful escape in the mountains or a beachside oasis, choosing the right retreat is more than a pretty destination.
Before you book, here are 10 key things to consider to ensure your retreat experience is everything you want - and more.
Your intention. What are you hoping to get out of this retreat?
A break from daily stress?
Deepening your physical practice?
Space to process emotions or personal growth?
Connecting with like-minded people?
Before you start searching for retreats, take a few quiet moments to reflect on your intention. Let it guide your decision-making. Let it be focuses on you and what you truly need.
The location. The setting of a retreat shapes the experience. Do you thrive in tropical beach energy, or do mountains call to you? Maybe you’re drawn to the stillness of a desert or a lively city.
Nature retreats tend to be grounding and introspective.
Urban retreats often include cultural immersion and movement.
International retreats may offer adventure but require more planning.
Close your eyes and imagine your ideal retreat. What do you see? What do you hear? What is around you that lends itself to your retreat intention? Let that vision guide your choice.
Retreat and yoga style. Every retreat has its own vibe. Some are restorative and slow, while others are active and dynamic. Some blend meditation and spirituality, while others focus purely on asana practice. Before you book, learn:
The type of yoga offered (Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, Kundalini, etc.)
The daily schedule. Is it packed or more relaxed? How many yoga classes are included?
Are there deeper workshops to learn or only yoga classes?
Is the retreat open to beginners or is a certain fitness level and yoga experience recommended?
Look for a retreat that aligns with your current needs. If you crave stillness, a fast-paced itinerary may not be the right fit.
The retreat leader. The yoga teacher(s) and facilitators set the tone for your experience. Research their teaching style, background, and philosophy.
Are they experienced in guiding retreats, or is this their first?
Do they offer adjustments and personalized guidance?
What’s their approach to yoga beyond the physical practice?
Follow the instructor on social media or take a class with them to get a feel for their energy before committing. Or reach out and ask them to chat! You are investing a lot of time and money into the retreat, it is important to feel comfortable and connected to the person leading it.
Group dynamic and size. Are you looking for a small, intimate retreat or a larger, community-driven experience? Is a co-ed retreat okay? What level of diversity would you like to see?
Small groups (10-15 people) allow for personalized attention and deep connection.
Larger retreats may offer more variety and energy but less one-on-one time.
If deep connections matter to you, look for retreats that encourage bonding beyond the mat. Learn if group meals, excursions, or fireside chats are part of the experience.
What is included and what isn't. Not all retreats are all-inclusive. Some cover everything—lodging, meals, yoga, and excursions—while others may require extra costs for:
Flights and ground transportation.
Meals outside of the retreat center.
Excursions or add-on experiences.
Spa treatments or wellness services.
Always double-check what’s included before booking so there are no surprises when you arrive. And don't forget some extra spending money for a little gift to bring home and remind you of your experience!
Food and accommodations. Since you’ll be spending most of your time here, make sure the food and lodging align with your comfort levels.
Does the retreat cater to dietary needs? (Vegan, gluten-free, allergies, etc.)
Is lodging private or shared? Do you need your own space, or are you open to roommates?
Is it a luxury retreat, an eco-lodge, or a simple ashram stay?
Your surroundings should support your retreat experience, not distract from it. Choose a place that feels like a sanctuary.
Your budget and hidden costs. Retreats range from budget-friendly to luxury escapes. Before booking, be clear on:
Total cost, including all fees and taxes.
Payment plans, deposit policies, and refund policies.
Any additional expenses and gratuities.
Travel insurance. This is always recommended in case of emergencies - and not often included in the retreat cost.
A retreat is an investment in yourself. Make sure it aligns with your finances so you can fully enjoy the experience without stress.
Free time or a packed agenda. Some retreats offer back-to-back activities, while others allow for plenty of solo reflection time. What’s your ideal balance?
Do you prefer structured days with planned yoga, workshops, and excursions?
Or do you crave space to explore, rest, and move at your own pace?
Are you using this retreat as a time solely dedicated to your yoga practice or are you also interested in seeing a new place or learning about a new culture?
Choose a retreat that honors your energy and go back to your intention. Are you looking for a full immersion and a busy schedule? Or flexibility to go with the flow?
Possible red flags. Not every retreat is created with integrity. Stay mindful of these warning signs:
Lack of clear information about accommodations, food, or schedule.
Over-promising (“life-changing” doesn’t mean the same for everyone).
No past reviews or testimonials.
Unresponsive communication from the retreat host.
Trust your gut. If something feels off, explore other options. The right retreat will feel aligned. And will truly be one of the most amazing experiences you'll ever have.
